Area Law Enforcement
Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
A senior representative said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
