Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
