A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
